National Geographic

One picture is worth a thousand words

National Geographic is well known for its breathtaking photography. Every year the company organizes a contest where everyone can submit their photos of landscapes, animals, and people.

Commissioned by DotControl, I was responsible for designing an interface for the three phases of the contest: submission, voting, and presentation.

The National Geographic Photo contest platform was Official DIA nominee (Dutch Interactive Awards). The Dutch Interactive Awards (DIA) are the prizes for the best interactive work by Dutch makers.

Get carried away in the world of...

On the category page, the visitor is taken into the world of animals, landscapes, and people by animations, screen-filling images, and inspiring videos. By pressing the 'Foto insturen' (submit photo) button, the visitor will go through a multiple-step funnel, allowing them to submit their pieces quickly.

Because we built the design mainly based on images, National Geographic is still using the design years later. The thousands of submissions and votes confirm that they are far from tired of the current platform.
